In the Garden  March 2007

Last year I planted a new crab apple tree having seen it in the new year still full of red crab apples. On enquiry I read the berries on this variety are usually not eaten by the birds until the end of February (‘Malus Red Sentinel’ I think) I was surprised how well it bloomed in its first year and the ‘apples’ followed and at the end of February had not been touched.  In the last few days a pair of blackbirds are enjoying a feast and as we were leaving, camera in hand to photograph the high tide‘mum’ was enjoying her feed so much she took no notice of me in the car and continued tucking in. Now they are all gone and it is coming into leaf
