Echium at 6ft in May

Its now  mid June and there are more dramatic changes in the garden. We have had some very warm weather and some more heavy rain - both welcome to some of us.  Now  there is lots of work to catch up on, removing the last of the bulb leaves staking Dahlias and other herbaceous plants and generally tidying up.

The Horticultural Society held their annual Garden Party on the 16th. The threatened heavy rain didn’t keep members at home with over sixty attending at Mr & Mrs Mann’s garden in East Mersea.  Apart from one short, sharp shower which sent everyone running for cover and umbrellas the rain held off for most of the the  evening and a good time was had by all.

Not normally much of a vegetable grower, I have several buckets of potatoes and french beans and carrots in pots which look to be doing quite well so far

Some of my favourite Poppies

Early in the month, the Tulips are finished but new bulbs are still flowering - Allium siculum and Scilla Peruviana in particular.

Of the Morning glories I grew from Sherill’s seeds, I have had pink and pale blue in flower so far.  Two Mango seeds I planted a few weeks ago are doing well.  Some I grew last year sadly died so I’m hoping these will last longer.  I also have tree seedlings of Albizzia, Ailanthus (Tree of Heaven)  Dwarf Pink Oleander, Carob and Red Passion Flower. I  trimmed back a Tibouchina in the greenhouse and took cuttings which seem  to be growing, to my surprise.

Last year Patrick at ‘Growing Together’ gave some of our Gardening Club members an Echium plant, a biennial which in flower reaches 6 feet or more.  Sadly mine died but my sisters reached a that height and is coming into full bloom.

One shrub flowering well was my Red Clianthus, and a pale pink Weigela is also in full bloom

Echium

The Echium by 14th June had reached 12ft and is in full bloom.  Its not the most attractive of plants but an interesting achievement
